We are a publishing company producing a range of reference books and textbooks for surgeons and other health care professionals. I am writing this letter on behalf of Michael Ferreira, who has been working as a freelance indexer for our company for more years than I know. I joined the production department of the Science and Technology division nearly 7 years ago, starting out as the Administrative Assistant to the Director. I worked my way up to Project Manager within 2 years and since then I have worked with Michael on approximately 3-4 titles each year. Today I am a Team Leader managing a group of project managers, so I have fewer titles than I used to, but I still try to send projects to Michael for indexing whenever I can and I have referred him to many new project managers who have joined the department.

Michael’s indexing work has always been thorough and well-received by our sometimes demanding authors. Whenever especially picky authors have asked that additional terms be added or changes made, Michael has kindly accommodated their requests and done so promptly. He often goes above and beyond the usual indexer duties and points out proofreader issues he encounters during his indexing. He is also very reliable, delivering indexes per our contracted completion date. That particular trait is extremely important for a deadline-driven publisher. The project managers within the department all greatly appreciate Michael’s conscious effort to work within our tight schedules. And if he’s ever worried about meeting a deadline, he is honest about it and lets the project manager know as soon as possible.

Most of all, though, Michael is an absolute pleasure to work with time and time again. His communication is always warm and friendly. He rarely needs to come back to me with questions about an assignment, but he will always notify me if something is amiss or if there is a problem with the pages he’s indexing. Whenever I send Michael work, I don’t have to give it another thought because I can trust that he will do the job well, on schedule, and within budget—all of which makes the busy life of a project manager just a little bit easier!

I’ve been working with Michael for almost 10 years, most recently last month on an index for a 2-volume, 3000-page Endocrinology textbook. He is an exceptional worker who creates light, medium, or heavy indexes in a timely matter, and is one of our most requested indexers. His chief skills are his attention to detail, knowledge of medical terminology, and good, consistent work. Our authors are always pleased with his thoroughness. He was also one of our first indexers to learn xml-first coding so that he could adapt to our new procedures, but he is comfortable compiling traditional indexes, as well.
